Most owners cannot tune their own ECU because of extensive encryption. To retune a factory ECU, the installation of a chip or additional circuit board is generally required. Foreign exchange rates are the rates at which the currency of one country can be bought by the currency of another. The basic standard by which this value can be measured is gold. In fact from 1870 to 1914, the global exchange rate was fixed or pegged to the gold standard, where the price of a country’s currency was determined on the basis of gold ounces.
When the gold standard was discontinued in 1914, the market of foreign exchange rates crumpled. Though some countries tried to reinstall it, the Great Depression hit the United States in 1929 which caused the gold standard to be completely suspended.
At the end of World War II, the Bretton Woods Agreement was signed which fashioned a system of foreign exchange rates where the all currencies were fixed to the US dollar, which in turn was fixed to the gold standard. The International Monetary Fund was also set up to supervise and maintain stability in foreign trade.
In 1971, the peg to the US dollar was done away with, and by 1985 the currencies of all major governments were allowed to follow the market forces of supply-demand, which is termed as the floating exchange rate system.
